People say a GIS certificate is just that and that it doesn't matter where you get it, so why is there such a huge discrepancy in the schools that offer them?
UC Riverside - Supposedly very reputable - 24 units - $4,600
USC - Obviously reputable - 16 units - $20,000+
Cal State LA - Just a run-of-the-mill program it seems - 12 units - Price unknown, probably $2,000
So if it's just a "Certificate" why does the USC program even exist, at that price no less?

I wouldn't. I would try to go to as many free events that ERSI put on and pick peoples brains. A practitioner would give you better advice than an academic any day. Now if you could take night school classes taught by a practitioner, my thought may change a bit.Originally posted by jabba rookie

Seriously. a previous intern had this complicated ass way of creating shapefiles. She said her professor said it was "the only way". Damn it, I used the force and showed her the power of the dark side, and together, we ruled a new shapefie in about 5 minutes

I taught myself the basics of GIS from toying on the PCs in the computer studio in college. I put together a very rudimentary portfolio and landed the first (of several internships) working for the state geological survey which had an office on campus.
