Hello. My name is Karen Maines. I live in a small city in Northeast Texas. I've been involved in our city's development for over 10 years, most recently as chair of our Planning and Zoning Commission. I have a passion for our city, and continue to get involved in multiple tasks forces and development committies.
My question today concerns dumpster screening within the city. Longview adopted screening requirements several years ago, and for the most part, the ordiance has served well. The problem involves the addition of recycling. It's great that businesses are adopting recycling, but now have no place to locate these additional dumpsters. Our mayor, while supporting recycling efforts, is receiving complaints from business owners that requiring screening of all dumpsters is placing a finacial hardship on them. It's rumored that the mayor will ask that the recycling dumpsters be exemp from any screening requirements. I know that other communities are facing this same issue, and I'm searching for solutions.
