    Old Boston

Anyone know what happened to that isthmus that used to form the base of the old town of Boston in the colonial era?

I was looking on google maps for it, but can find no trace of it. Presumably, some significant fill occurred and the port channels re-engineered long ago. Anyone familiar with it?
People will miss that it once meant something to be Southern or Midwestern. It doesn't mean much now, except for the climate. The question, “Where are you from?” doesn't lead to anything odd or interesting. They live somewhere near a Gap store, and what else do you need to know? - Garrison Keillor

Yes, very significant amounts of landfilling has occurred since Colonial times. From the central part of Boston Common on west, the entire Back Bay area is landfill. The best that I can tell, that isthmus was about where Tremont St crosses the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90), now.

There are several great books about this, most notably Gaining Ground: A History of Landmaking in Boston and Boston: A Topographical History. Basically, they filled and filled and filled some more.
