Cost of roads in a subdivision?

Wondering what costs are involved in developing a subdivision. Particularily, how much does it cost to put roads into the subdivision (on a per mile basis). I know the cost varies depending on many factors, so a wide price range is fine. Thanks so much for the help.

Road estimating depends on many factors. Roads are based on lineal foot (LF) not miles. It is depended on region, whether or not the road project is public versus private (i.e. prevailing wage v. non-prevailing wage), what goes into the street i.e. sidewalks, curb, gutter, landscaping etc, base material you are using, any additional "pretty" things such as pavers. You get where i am going with this. You need to be more specific.

Add to that the cost of removing the water (sewers), grading if needed, local prices for labor or materials. What kind of subdivision is it? For example an industrial subdivision will need a much more durable pavement than one in a residential area that has no through traffic.

What is the area's freeze thaw cycle? You don't want to build a road only to have to re-build it a few years later. NYC will be less impacted by freeze thaw than Buffalo or N NYS but it will have a much higher traffic load (depending upon land use).

The bottom line is there is no rough cost that can be used. This definitely has to be done professionally. Hire a PE and an estimator or risk huge over-runs that might bankrupt the project.

Try talking with the streets department or CIP. They can probably look at what they spent to build a road in the area. Like everyone else stated the number will be a WAG but when I need a ballpark figure those two department are my sources. My other source are construction companies. Call one that is large enough to have a business development person. You would be surprised on how much information they will provide to...the down side is they will follow up with you on the project every month until the bid is out.

Add to that what are the design standards for the roads in the jurisdiction you are looking at? Plus, it's not just the roads the themselves. You have to figure testing into the cost.

    Many other factors.....

Don't forget all the other costs involved with infrastructure in the street, sewer line access, power, water, fire, signs and curbs.
