    The fictional career discussion thread

I've been contemplating going on sabbatical to study planning practices in Germany for several months now. I think it's time to make it happen. I'll contact HR right away and let them know I'll be leaving in two weeks and plan to return some time in late September or early October after my article has been published.

Has anyone else's employer been making rumblings about reducing them to 50% pay while on sabbatical? It's frightening I tell you.
People will miss that it once meant something to be Southern or Midwestern. It doesn't mean much now, except for the climate. The question, “Where are you from?” doesn't lead to anything odd or interesting. They live somewhere near a Gap store, and what else do you need to know? - Garrison Keillor

My salary was reduced to 55% while I took the last six months to finish my book. I was worried, but the sales have just really more than offset the salary reduction. Who would have thought that so many people would have wanted to read about an urban planner who gets caught up in murder plots and consults with the FBI on cases that have unexpected urban or geographical components? It boggles the mind, but the money is just coming in Cha-CHING!

I am thinking about leaving the high paced world of economic development to become a lifeguard in a car wash. Every year someone almost dies because they went into a car wash with their sunroof open or convertible top down. I am running legislation through the legislature to mandate that every carwash has at least one life guard on duty.

It really wasn't a sabbatical as much as it was six months of furlough. But I've got to tell you, the people of this town were great. Tons of support ranging from providing meals to leaving envelopes of cash in my mailbox. All anonymous, of course, and you wouldn't believe the accolades that I received in the local newspaper. Who would have thought that a planner would be so appreciated in their own city? I was almost ready to give up the profession but now that I know just how much we are all beloved by the public that I'm going to rededicate my life to public service.
