How Illinois DOT looks at bicycling

    Here ya go, kiddies ...

    Bike safe in Illinois !

Is it just me, or does IDOT still think of bicycles as toys?

That works great for rural Illinois or maybe Springfield, but this looks like it's for Chicago land. Outside of a park where are you going to see a kid on a bike in that area?

Would it have killed them to include the parent(s) on bikes as well, just so it can show grown-ups biking as well?

"Oh, that is all well and good, but, voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country."

Was that picture taken in Busse Woods?

Yeah, Chicagoland and biking brings to mind spandex warriors, not little girls with a banana seat.

Having grown up in Chicagoland myself, I can vouch that there are plenty of places where kids can roam around on their bikes unsupervised. I did it all growing up. There is also a great network of rails to trails paths (Illinois Prairie Path) and other dedicated trails (Fox RIver Trail) to go along with the forest preserve system that makes it a great place for biking. Still, I agree that they could have used a better photo and having working with IDOT before I know firsthand that they are rather antiquated when it comes to their views on a LOT of things - bicycles included. Bastions of progressive planning they are not.

I didn't mean to badmouth Chicago, too much, I just envision it as Midori said, spandex warriors, not little Rygors on their Stingray pulling jumps off whatever you can find - it's okay to admit it, that's what I did growing up in Phoenix where there were no bike trails at the time.

The caption under the fold says, " Bicyclists in Will County. "

I guess the caption, then, includes the knowledge that the parents are nearby.
