After a major natural disaster, FEMA’s Building Science Branch (BSB) will deploy a Mitigation Assessment Team (MAT) to assess the vulnerability of buildings and provide recommendations to Increase building resistance to damage caused by hazard events. MATs were deployed to Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Missouri, and Tennessee in the wake of the devastation from the 2011 tornado outbreak; as well as New York and New Jersey in response to the 2012 Hurricane Sandy event. The 1.5 hour webinar identifies damages observed at critical and essential facilities, schools, commercial and multi-family buildings, commercial and public refuge areas, residential buildings, residential refuge areas, community safe rooms, and residential safe rooms from the 2011 tornado outbreak. The webinar also identifies damages observed at coastal residential areas, hospitals and critical facilities, high-rise, police, fire, municipal buildings, schools, and historic structures from Hurricane Sandy. The webinar offers key take-aways, success stories, and outcomes from the MAT investigations. A list of deliverables produced by the MAT program are briefly explained in the conclusion of the webinar.
