    Appearance Design Manuals

Does anyone know of any good samples of online appearance design manuals? Anything that incorporates diagrams and pictures into its zoning ordinance would be helpful.

When I began my search on appearance design manuals, I went to the DPZ site and couldn't really find anything. Why did I go there? Well, I remember when I read "Geography From Nowhere" that Kunstler had some text about Duany and his ability at "capturing the radio broadcasting tower." That is, when a zoning standards (or whatever it was) book was to be re-written, he took on the job and included a visual zoning code, as opposed to a text-heavy publication. It's that visual zoning code, or anything that comes close to it, that I am looking for.

    Thanks!

Try here and follow the link for "architectural design guides"

Not sure how "Good" they are compared to what others are doing, but they are functional and serve us well.

    Thanks!

However, I am looking for something that is more specific. Something that includes renderings, not photographic images.

Sorry, but the Durham Hill Design Guide didn't do anything for me. The "rural or agrarian" theme is indeed catchy, but ultimately, it's too soft and not specific enough.

    Try Burlington, Vermont:

Go the Planning Department page, and the design guides should be there.

No need to be sorry. That one's a very specific context and not appropriate everywhere.

If you find any that aren't on this list, let me know.

I haven't been able to find any DPZ code online.

Thanks, but those are soft as well.

Anyone out there know of any zoning codes that incorporate design and appearance, by using both text and images?

Pittsburgh has a very well-done "general" design guide at

    Pittsburgh Urban Design Guide

If you have more of an interest in a "Main Street" guide you may want to check out Oregon at

    Oregon Main Street Design Guide

Give me some more detail on the type of design guide (i.e., downtown, residential, street, etc.) and maybe I can suggest others.

James City County, VA has a Community Appearance Guide that may be helpful:
    http://www.jccegov.com/pdf/compplan/guide4.pdf

Chesterfield County, VA also has useful documents on their Planning Division site:
    http://www.co.chesterfield.va.us/Com...g/planhome.asp

    Specifically, the Design Standards Manual:

And "Shaping the Design of Chesterfield County":

    Hope this helps!
