And now I'll have to admit that my alma mater has a mascot that I just don't get.

I just made my porn star avatar - it rocks! (As in, 'jail house' rocks!)

It's a good thing we didn't start porn star avatar week while PlannerGirl is away at her... ummm... conference . She would be upset she missed it, me thinks!

    Kind of related....

How many of you went to colleges where the mascots had to be changed because it was suddenly considered offensive?

Eastern Michigan was and always had been the Hurons, until somebody decided that it was derogatory to the Huron Indians and changed it to the Eagles. It's been this whole controversy since. What's interesting, is even the area Hurons were pissed that EMU changed the name to the Eagles.

UW-Oshkosh is home of the Titans. Its hard to piss off a bunch of dead greeks.

High school mascot was the Lasers. Stupid. The logo was drawn like a lightning bolt. What kind of laser does that?!

Well, we can't manage to beat South Florida or TCU but I am still a proud alumnus.

    Go Eagles!!

I didn't go there, but Marquette (in Milwaukee) changed its name from the Warriors to the Golden Eagles because Warrior was ofensive to Native Americans. There have been student movements to get it to change, but the school refuses. The funny thing is that they could have simply changed their logo/mascot from the Native American warrior to a generic-looking white dude warrior. Stores still sell Warrior apparel and the most frequently heard chant at home games is still "Lets Go Warriors." Nobody around here calls them the Golden Eagles...its either "Marquette" or "The Warriors"

Cool. I don't know how I missed that.

I just went to the Ball State CAP website and looked us all up. Based on our thesis titles, we all sound like true planning geeks:
Bullwinkle: Small Community Wastewater Treatment: A Cost Effective Analysis
Andy Dobson: Bioregionalism and the Improvement of Local Environmental Planning
Joe Illif: A Critical Review of the Small Town Planning Handbook and the Upland Comprehensive Plan
NHPlanner: Meeting the Challenge of Zoning in the Information Age: Planning for Wireless Communications Facilities

Joe, is that the Upland, Indiana Comprehensive Plan? I grew up in Fairmount and still go to Ivanhoes for ice cream every time I go home. Nice little town.

I actually considered it... I thought their old school system of pass/no pass/honor system was interesting.

My bestfriend is a Slug... and she loved her college experience. But it would be hard to get behind women's baskeball or something and scream "Go Lady Slugs!" But then Go Ags didn't have much weight to it either.

    Big game on Saturday!

Last year the Spartans beat us in the final second of the game in East Lansing. The time was 00:01 on the scoreboard when Jeff Smoker led his team to victory during controversial refereeing. This year they are in Ann Arbor and the Wolverines are a 15.5 point favorite. Go Blue!
