City vs. City #5: Orlando vs. Kansas City

Orlando: it's where Dan lives now. Toasty weather, lots of touristy diversions, about an hour from the Gulf or Atlantic Ocean, decent downtown nightlife, booming population. However ... very suburban in character, few cultural amenities, not much history, very transient population, toll roads everywhere, more than its share of Confederate enclaves (coughWinterGarden coughcoughBithlo coughSaintCloud), tourist-based economy, and no topography.

Kansas City: it's where Dan is moving to. Great urban neighborhoods, interesting history, interesting landscape, fantastic cultural and urban amenities,Country Club Plaza, good schools, and a more rooted population However ... scary weather, no large bodies of water nearby, more urban grit (some might see that as negative), nation's largest freeway system relative to population, Missouri dysfunctionality, risk of Sprint pulling a Worldcom.

I generally do not like Florida, not even for short visits. I've never been to Kansas City, but I suspect it's alot like Milwaukee. By that I mean, I'm sure there are a lot of good qualities, but the attractions are not known to "outsiders".

I can't really warm up to Kansas City, probably because of the time I served at a nearby military installation. The best part of it was the chiggers. I'm sure the dogs won't like them. At the same time, Orlando does nothing for me, either. Boring and utterly uninspiring. I'm with bturk on this one.

AAACK! Well, as a NATIVE of Florida and lifelong resident of the Orlando area (even pre-Mickey!), except for 3 years in New England (it was a long time ago, but when I first heard they listened to Janis Ian I thought, who ARE these people???)... Anyway, there is a lot to appreciate here. I can't imagine giving up weekends at the beach, but then I guess it's ingrained in me. Florida heat vs. KC meat; I vote Florida.

I've visited my dad's family in Florida a few times... I don't like it much. I don't know much about Kansas City, but it's gotta be better than Florida in my mind at least. Good luck with the move.

Like Zoning Goddess, I'm Florida-born, and was a resident of the Orlando area before it was invaded by the giant rodent, so I have to vote for Orlando. I haven't lived there since I was a child, but there is always a part of me that will always call it "home", even with the drastic changes of the last 30 years.
BTW, congrats on landing a new job to Dan!

Do I really have to justify my answer? Besides the BBQ (Gates, Fiorellas Jack Stack, Arthur Bryants), you've got the wide (the wide) Missouri, the Boulevard Beer Co, and the mighty Kansas City Chiefs.

Make sure that you visit the Harry Truman museum in Independence. Very, very cool.

Hey, jenniplans , I go digging through old threads all the time. I was placed in Cyburbia by a competing web blog thing site to wreak havoc with mods, and that's how I do it. And your "congrats" to Dan will probably be appropriate some day. You will be first in line.

Kansas City VS Orlando. I would have to go with KC, also. Whenever I have been in Orlando (always on business) It just felt blah.....no soul. OTOH, I really like the Tampa / St. Pete area. Maybe it's the Gulf. Odd that I would like Tampa Bay area because I generally don't like the heat.

You people talk about heat...I think they are equally miserable in the summertime. Isn't it in the 80s and 90s all the time in KC. At least in Florida, you can go to the beach and cool off, and it is nice and warm in winter. However, I'm not sure I would like the tourist trap and inland enclave of Orlando. I'm more of a Gulf Coast Florida guy.

But Kansas City is in the Midwest...and I love the Midwest...it's my home. But then again, it is interstate hell, it has no professional basketball team, and it's a big drug trafficking area.

I don't know on this one. I think I'll go with "neither" on this one...at least until I see both cities. If it was Florida vs. Missouri, though, it'd be a much more different story.

I will admit by bias first off...I'm a Florida naitive, and lived in the Orlando area long before the invasion by Uncle Walt and his little rodent friend.
If nothing else, the landscape and weather would be enough to make the decision for me. I need proximity to water, and there's a lake everywhere you turn in Orlando. I also am a warm-weather person, so Kansas City would be hard for me to take. Easy access to the beaches is also a big plus.

I went with the FLA heat, intown Orlando (Thorton Park) is a very cool area and there is a ton on new, condo/mixed use development going on and the places there draw a good crowd. And even though Orlando is not on the water, there is a ton of stuff to do with in an easy drive, parks (natural and theme), rivers, beaches, and on and on, so on the fun factor, I vote Orlando!
