Quotes of wisdom for grade schoolers

The kids in my daughter's 1st/2nd grade class have an assignment to come up with a one-line "Family Precept" they they will write out and hang on the walls above their lockers. They can be famous quotes or something original. There were some examples given:
    • "Your deeds are your monuments." - inscription on an Egyptian tomb
    • "It is better to know some of the questions than all of the answers." - James Thurber
    • "Just follow the day and reach for the sun!" - The Polyphonic Spree
    • "Kind words do not cost much, yet they accomplish much." - Blaise Pascal
    • ...

I have a feeling all of the ones I would like to suggest will probably be liked by my daughter but shot down by my wife... giving me a reprieve from participating. Off the top of my head, I'm thinking something along the lines of:
    • "If something's hard to do, then it's not worth doing." - Homer Simpson
    • "Life is too important to be taken seriously." - Oscar Wilde
    • "Don't believe everything you read on the Internet just because there's a picture with a quote next to it." - Abraham Lincoln
    • "Need a family precept? Why not Zoidberg?" - Zoidberg
    • "If you don't have anything nice to say, keep your mouth shut." - Grandma Ellen (my mom)
    • ...

What suggestions does the Throbbing Brain have?

My personal favorite is "It is better to say nothing and be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt." - Anon.
People will miss that it once meant something to be Southern or Midwestern. It doesn't mean much now, except for the climate. The question, “Where are you from?” doesn't lead to anything odd or interesting. They live somewhere near a Gap store, and what else do you need to know? - Garrison Keillor

    • "All persons, living and dead, are purely coincidental." - Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.
    • "There is a reason underwear is designed with a front and back" - Calvin Klein (probably)
    • "What's in this drink?" - Socrates
    • "Be excellent to each other." - Bill S. Preston, Esquire & Ted "Theodore" Logan
    • "Blessed are the Greek: for they shall inherit the earth". - Jesus, as misunderstood by an attendee of the Sermon on the Mount
    • "Every day is today. Yesterday is a myth and tomorrow an illusion". - Me
    • "Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It’s hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It’s round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you’ve got about a hundred years here. There’s only one rule that I know of, babies — ‘God damn it, you’ve got to be kind.” - Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. or just;
    • "God dammit, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.
I'm sorry. Is my bias showing?

Oooh! I like that Bill & Ted suggestion. And I was just trying to describe them to my daughter the other day since we were watching something that took place in San Dimas, CA and I asked if we'd see Bill & Ted in it and she had no idea who/what I was talking about so of course I had to go into a long-winded explanation.

When you're born in 1978 and you go to see Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure in the theater with your friend (and it's the first movie you get to see without an adult), it tends to imprint quite strongly.

"When you get to the fork in the road, take it." Yogi Berra

Several more of his would be quite useful too. This assignment could all be his quotes with each kid finding a specific one they enjoy.
"Whatever beer I'm drinking, is better than the one I'm not." DMLW
"Budweiser sells a product they reflectively insist on calling beer." John Oliver

My fave serious quote: I have learned silence from the talkative, toleration from the intolerant, and kindness from the unkind; yet, strange, I am ungrateful to those teachers. Khalil Gibran

My fave kind of silly quote: I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and doggone it, people like me. Stuart Smalley
