I've been searching alot about it online and I think I've figured it out a little. From what I gather they are an inflexible technology (hard to buy parts for), the elevated track makes stations very expensive to build, and they are ugly as hell. However, the safety record and speed do make them fairly attractive. Overall probably a better investment for dense cities with bad ground traffic problems, but not so good for developing cities.

1 problem with monorail is that they are harder to merge. If you wanted to join or spur 2 lines off. It is not impossible to spur the lines but is supposed to be more complicated somehow.
