I would prefer to marinade her in a light ginger basil oil, and slow cook her over a mesquite bar-b-que. Its a good thing.

I don't really care about her either way. I can't stand her, but I am sure she will come up with some way to get out of this by either plea bargain or by blaming her broker and saying that she knew nothing about it.

She can't claim ignorance of the law.
    1. She was on the board of directors for the stock exchange.
    2. She was a licensed stock broker for 20 years before starting her company.

She knew exactly what she was doing.

    Her attorney said that:

    1) "They're picking on her because she's a woman" - That's BS. I think the opposite is true where it looks politically incorrect to pick on a woman

    2) "They're picking on her because she's a celebrity" - That's also BS. Celebrities get away with everything.

    3) "They're picking on her because of their failure to prosecute top Enron and Woldcom bigwigs who are still living large" - I think this is true. They need to look tough even though they can't get around the big companies attorneys. BUT it doesn't change the fact that she needs to be punished if she's guilty. The fact that there are worse offenders than you doesn't let you off the hook.

How about a "The press doesn't provide enough information on any case for a thinking person to come to a rational conclusion with any real certainty" option? Its all infotainment people! Who really knows? I have heard of people making political careers off the corpses of the innocent.

People love to hate her. Maybe it is deserved; maybe she is just an enterprising person that was caught in a smear. I do not know for certain, and neither do any of you. I mean that in the nicest way, of course.

Nevertheless, if I knew an airplane was going to crash before the day was out, I would get off at the next layover stop. And I'm guessing you would too.

To some extent I agree. These things happen ALL the time. In these cases the SEC usually makes the person surrender any profits, pay a small fine, and move on - sometimes without ever an admission of wrong doing.

They are making an example of her.

Another thing to consider is that the enron/worldcom/etc execs went from being fairly wealthy to incredibly wealthy by stealing from employees and shareholders.

Martha's action was over an amount that basically amounted to pocket change to her, and didn't really directly screw anyone.

I think jordan has a point.

But, for "she's a woman" argument, I disagree. I've always thought she was one of those Disney Animatronic robots, not a real person

Well, okay, I'll out myself, she does have some cute wedding ideas and yes, I even watched her show on my day off yesterday while she was busy turning herself in to the US Marshall. But, I think she did it. I have a feeling though she's just going to get a big fine.

Perhaps she'll knit afgans for all the prision mates from fibers found on the ground outside.
When Jesus said "love your enemies", he probably didn't mean kill them.

I think she's guilty, but I do wonder how serious a crime it is. That may be because I guess I might have done the same thing, in the same position. If you know a stock you own is going to plummet, are you going to still hang onto it? I agree with the idea of a fine, and let's move on. Seriously, go after the folks at Enron and other companies who really screwed people.

Mad TV had a couple of skits about "Martha in Prison." She basically completely took over and ruled the cellblock with an rion fist. I still love Mad TV, as hit-and-miss as it can be.

Yes. It is human nature not to want to take a loss. Solve the problem by delaying all sell orders 24 hours. If you are an evil icon like Hillary, Cher and Katie Kouric make it 48 hours. Buy orders would be instant. That would freak out the wall street boys.

    News Flash:

"Corporate media continues to focus in on Martha Stewart to prove to all patriotic Americans that the Bush Administration is willing to clamp down on corporate malfeasance...." and the beat goes on.

IMHO, Martha's pilfering of 2-300k is peanuts compared to the destabiliation of the stock market and US economy thanks, in large part, to Kenny Lay and the rest of the boys at Enron. No question Martha did wrong and needs to be held accountable, and all this makes a good story, but I find this discussion really a big distraction to the real issues at hand.

Let's all remember that MS had to work/manipulate her way into the elitist circles of this country. She wasn't born into them like so many others currently in power in this country. Could it be that her donations to the democratic party that did her in?? Nah, that'd be way too cynical for me to think that.
