Sprawl Article: "What's Wrong With Urban Planning?"

Did anyone read the Planetizen newswire of Sept. 29, 2003? In it there is a link to an article by Dennis Byrne, a freelance writer for the Chicago Tribune, in which he advocates the choice to live where one wants (presumably in a sprawling environment?) rather than in a smartly planned city. Anyway, Byrne notes that "urban reformers" should look into how we can create more jobs that telecommute rather than rely on a car. He mentions that since he telecommutes he saves the public the costs of subsidizing his trip on mass transit. Does he not realize that the public subsidizes far more his use of the auto. From the cheap gas to the local roads, clearly auto subsidies are quite higher than transit.
Does anyone have any thoughts on the article?

I find it endlessly ironic that it's the anti-smart growth people who are the ones always yelling about choice. The fact of the matter is the status quo as it exists today doesn't provide for choice. You pretty much have to live in a detached house in the suburbs, which all look pretty much the same.

... But ask for a few neighborhoods here and there with some variety, and suddenly you're the communist a-hole forcing his version of the world down everyone else’s throat.

Imagine that, a writer that thinks people should all telecommute to jobs. Um, does he even realize that most jobs are not conducive to telecommuting?

I guess this is the typical case of people fearing what they don't understand... they simply do not understand that good planning allows everybody live in a fairly built enviroment...

And writers that give their opinion about planning is like planner giving their opinion about olftalmology...

The Tribune is a suburb-controlled, city hating, Daley hating ultra-conservitive rag.
