Buffalo, New York has what may be the oldest zoning code in the United States; it was adopted in 1950. The city is in the process of replacing its outdated land use regulations with the
Buffalo Green Code, soon joining Denver and Miami as major cities with form-based zoning codes. Unlike the old zoning code, which attempted to separate uses and impose a suburban model to address post-War urban ills, the Green Code respects Buffalo's dense, walkable, mixed-use built environment.
