APA Denver Conference get-together

This thread is for the discussion of a possible Cyburbia get-together at the 2003 APA National Planning Conference in Denver, taking place between Saturday, 29 March and Wednesday, 2 April.

Consider the following:

The opening reception is on Sunday, 30 March. Can't miss that!

University alumni receptions are traditionally held on Monday; this falls on 31 March.

Many of us will either be packing or on the LoDo microbrewery crawl on Tuesday, 1 April.

Everybody leaves on Wedneday, if not Tuesday night.

My dogs and I will be staying at the Warwick, one of the official conference hotels. I'll have my car, but I'm not driving through the maze of one-way streets in downtown Denver with a healthy buzz.

I'm thinking the best night for a get-together is either Saturday, 29 March, or Monday, 31 March after all the student and alumni receptions. I'm leaning toards 9:00 PM, at the Falling Rock Tap House, at 1919 Blake Street in LoDo. It was my local when I lived in Denver, it's not loud, it's accessible using the free 16th Avenue shuttle, and there's the opportunity to crawl to another LoDo pub afterwards.

Just reference the "Where in the World is bturk #XX" threads, and the "Real Picture" thread for Planderella. No other incriminating pictures will be permitted. ;)

Saturday is the day that works best for me as well. My boss registered me for the LoDo Microbrew tour, the Comedy Night, and the Cajun & Blues Evening...so Saturday is really the only "free" night we'll have.

While I won't be signing up for the conference, I think I can manage to fly in for the weekend. Saturday would work best for me.

What about Saturday, Monday, AND Tuesday? I'll probably be out either way :-b

We are flying out on Friday afternoon and leaving Denver Wednesday morning, so we are pretty flexible. There's going to be a group of us though - hope that's not a problem. My sister and another of our friends is coming, Chad was convinced because of the cheap airfare and then my planner friend from WI is coming too.

Oh Oh...don't get into trouble :) Either way, we will be out and about, but trying to stay out of trouble, of course!

Anyone we and Prudence would know?
She works for the City of Franklin - started about ten months ago and before that was in MI. Do you know anyone over there?

YEP! It's the town right next door, matter of fact, although I havent met her yet. I know her former manager and her new manager. Its a horrible place to be a planner though!

Oh - and I spoke with her when she applied for a job with my department. She was on the short list until we had a hiring freeze, when she got snapped up before our freeze was lifted.

OOOH!! I think I remember!! She had an interview somewhere, and she had said she talked to someone who she was going to apply with. I just emailed her to ask her who/where that was.

Creepy!!!

It sounds from that article that there is a bunch of crap going on there too. that sucks.

To follow the procedures established last year...

I move that the 2nd Annual Cyburbia Social be held at the Falling Rock at 8PM on Saturday March 29, 2003.

There's supposed to be an Internet cafe at this year's conference. I'm trying to think of ways to promote Cyburbia; for instance, getting lots of stickers made and leaving them in the 'Net area.

If I remember correctly, the so-called Internet Cafe at the Chicago conference consisted of 2 computers that you had to stand in line for about 15 minutes.

If that's the case in Denver, I'll just hoof it over to the public library. I was expecting 10 to 20 computers, and some serious Web surfing going on.

Downtown Denver is ripe with open wireless networks, if anyone here is lucky enough to have a laptop with a wireless network card.

All of our laptops are being equipped with them, starting this year. I'm leaving mine at home - not worth the airport hassles.

That is so sweet. I promise to be on my best behavior -until the second beer. I'm a lightweight when it comes to drinking. :)

The restaurant does webcast the bar - take a look at their home page. ;)

Thanks :)

I hope to make it to Denver, but we are undergoing a leadership change at work and no one here really knows what will happen to "non-necessary" budget items.

I'm sad...

I want to go drinking in Denver. I guess I'll have to wait until DC to see everyone again...I expect huge numbers for the third annual gathering...

We need shirts, especially for those of us who spawned the event at the House of Blues (and you know who you are)...

Yes and we won't make the mistake again of doing it the same night as the opening reception -- It was getting a little blurry in there, ya know?

[ot]Nope. My hopes at getting a laptop were dashed this past week. $700 in repairs to the car that wasn't covered by the warranty; $500 to upgrade the mobo, CPU and video card of the home PC; and this morning I found out that over the next couple of years I'll be facing several grand in dental work, even with insurance ... my childhood-era fillings are all now in serious need of repair, and I may need a couple of crowns. Bye-bye deductible ... [/ot]

OT

I commiserate with you Dan,

Don't you just love it when your VW breaks down. In the last month I've replaced my muffler, water pump and fixed the air pump for the door locks and I could really use a new battery. I also added a CD player to teh car.

Last year I had all of my fillings from youth replaced. Not too bad as the dentist and her assistant are easy to look at, but still no fun. Fortuneately, my insurance covered most of it. One suggestion is to get a bite plate made for sleeping, it seems to reduce the wear on fillings.

Back OT

I will have to start asking soon if I can go to DC next year, it may be more affordable, as I could drive.

Aw- if we can get into a B&B and accepts dogs, James and I may even pack up the little man (weighing in at 62lbs now) and let him romp around.

If it helps I met a woman at a club who is a 3rd year dental student. She may be able to help if you'd care to swing by Milwaukee. My dentist never looked like this woman. You would actually look forward to the pain... I may begin chewing on gravel...

The Warwick, one of the conference hotels, is dog-friendly. It's close to the Convention Center, and it was recently gutted and rehabbed; it's quite nice.

The Hotel Monaco, a boutique hotel in downtown Denver, is extremely dog-friendly, with a staff that'll even give your pooch daily walkies. However, rooms there run $250 a night and up.

Most Holiday Inns are dog-friendly.

Bailey used to be a regular at The Big Backyard.
