As inspired by the Where Are You From thread.

I noticed that a lot of Cyburbianites move around for jobs and such and thereby may not necessarily be a native of the city where they are currently located. Just out of curiousity, who's truly home and who isn't?

Me - born in New Orleans but raised in the suburbs where I currently work and live.

Born and raised in Southern Ontario, about an hour north of Toronto. Now live in Northern NB.

You are not local here until you marry a relative.

I'm within 100 miles, does that count?

Not much call for planners or city geeks in Bode, Iowa after all

All these people talk to funny for me to ever claim to be naive.
Moved from South Carolina to Pittsburgh for a job and, well... a girl. I miss the South and my family and friends a good bit sometimes but have started to really enjoy living my newly adopted city. Besides, a good bourbon, a phone call or air fare are all effective homesickness treatments.

Born overseas but live and work in the city I grew up in. So I'm about 9/10ths native at this point, and marrying someone who's a 3rd generation native.

Born in Milwaukee. Spent early years in Maryland before returning to the Milwaukee burbs to grow up, moved upstate for college, now I'm back in Milwaukee burbs. I guess that qualifies as native.

Non-native.

Born and bred in New Jersey (that's where the toxic glow comes from).

This Hoosier City is terribly xenophobic. If you aren't born-and-raised, you can have a green card, but you will never be native.

I asnwer politely that I am not a Hoosier, but I am the father of two of 'em. This seems to bug a surprising number of people.

I guess if you're within 25-50 miles of your birthtown (or within its metro area) then that can qualify you as a native.

Born and raised in the suburbs of Hartford, Connecticut. Left that state 14 years ago.

Have never worked there as a planner. Never will, either.

(Sorry, Connecticut.)

As you already know Planderella, but for the benefit of others' curiosity, I was born in Cincinnati, OH and moved to the burbs of the Big Easy when I was a very young lad. I work in one of the Big Easy's many burbs.

I live and work about 20 minutes east of the town I was born in, and 30 min. north of the ancestral home. I did move away for years, but came back 8 years ago.

I was born and raised in Alpena, MI (northerneastern lower peninsula).

I moved to Chicago because of the jobs, great access to Great Lakes states, and the great urbanity of Chicago. Will stay here.

Michigan is woefully lacking any extensive walkable urbanity.

You betcha!

Funny thing is, my geneaology indicates that the family was in Indiana in the 1820s, but had the good sense to move to Minnesota (Le Seur, Martini ) by the 1860s.

Don't ask how we got to Jersey....

That's the place! Never, been but I hear it's nice . . .

No, the wrong turn was in Minden, Nevada, not Albuquerque. Though I have been there and it is pretty sweet.

Go Vikes!

Born and raised in northeastern Indiana (Fort Wayne)

Went to school in Peoria, Illinois (I was under the delusion that I could be an electrical engineer) and Virginia (planning MURP)

Worked in Knoxville for two years

Lived in California for 12. I really can't imagine living anywhere else :)-certainly not Indiana again (sorry, Hoosiers)

Born and raised in the Kensington/University Heights neighborhood in Buffalo, New York.

Very few local governments have planning agencies, and those that do hire through civil service, which in WNY traditionally has residency-before-application requirements.

I had no choice but to leave the area, and it's unlikely that I"ll ever return.

Definitely not a native. Many of the native Montanans are very adamant about the "them" and "us" mentality. Many ride around in trucks with bumper stickers that say "Native Montanan". At public hearings the old timers often preface their remarks by stating how many generations native Montanan they are. The Natives even differentiate between the number of generations. Hence a fifth generation native Montanan feels superior to a fourth generation Montanan.

I was born in Houston, but raised in New Orleans and north of Lake Pontchartrain. In 1986 I moved to Montana. Minus 19 months in Ketchikan, AK, I have been there ever since.

I am not a native Montanan but my so is. I am sure as soon as he learns how to talk he will start bitching about those "damned out-of-staters", like his Poppa and Mama (who is from Colombia).

Born and raised in Rochester, NY (town of Greece).
Lived in PA (Erie area)for 4 years (2 addresses).
Moved back to Rochester, NY for a year.
Headed down to Florida for a little more than 3 years
where I called Clermont home for one year and Lake Buena Vista home for two.
Moved on up to the Chicago area. First to Arlington Heights for a little less than a year, and now I currently reside in Des Plaines.

Somewhere, there is an angry postal worker trying to track me down. And he's got a bag full of credit card applications with him.

Move to Canada... they don't follow you up here. Apparently your credit record doesn't either. :)

Born in Lon Beach, California. Lived there for all of 6 months. Navy family, so we moved often. High school, law school, and fifteen subsequent years in the DC area so that is as close to a home as I have, especially since my parents, sister, mother-in-law, and two brothers-in-law all live in VA. Been in Oregon 12 years, so I'm on the road to becoming a local.

What to Say?

I was born in Cleveland, and am here now as a student. But I consider myself an Oklahoman through and through, as I've lived there since I was seven. People who talk to me on the phone have a hard time placing me because it's normal Midwestern slowed by a southern twang.

It snowed here this morning. It's not even the official end of summer yet... you may want to re-think that statement from one native southwesterner to another. ;)

Oh no, that won't keep me away. When James graduates from his masters program we're seriously looking. One of our friends just moved back two weeks ago (Toronto), his brother and parents are going to move back in the next few years, another friend is trying to get up there (interview this week), we want to go too.

I just want to be able to say "eh" all the time! ;)

Now now... it's not in the budget yet (and you know how that goes :( )... and anyway, you probably have the same credentials as my boss! You know you'll weather this hon... if they are stupid enough to let a gem like you go, they'll regret it when you get snapped up by another city! [/OT]
