Streets that run broadly south-west to north-east are aligned with summer solstice sunrises and winter solstice sunsets. Those that run south-east to north-west correspond to summer solstice sunsets and winter solstice sunrises.

Tantalisingly, the jury is still out on the million-dollar question. Are these selected streets in 694 cities laid out like this by accident or design?
