I'm not sure how to change the size of an image to use as an avatar. For example, if I find a picture that I like on the web, I save it under "my pictures" as a jpg. file.
But when I try to upload it as my avatar, it's too big.
Any words of wisdom? Thanks! :-}

If you don't have photoshop or its equivalent, you can post it in here and someone nice will often resize it for you.

80 x 80 pixel maximum dimensions; 3 kb maximum file size; .jpg, .gif and .png; and must NOT be animated.
