Maybe some industrious programmer can come up with a fast food restaurant random name generator using the [food item] [structure] premise so instead of the mundane 'Pizza Hut' we end up with place names like 'Tofu Barn' or better yet the "Moo goo Gai Pan Mauseleum" ('say anyone feel like running down to the Moo Goo Gaipan mauseleum for some egg rolls?' - doesn't quite roll off the tongue)....hmmm naming Burger places after professions/titles seems to be another popular theme - like Burger King or Burger Chef...instead, how about Burger Magistrate or Burger Administrator. I feel a new chain coming on......

I think they do that with Chinese restaurants. I just call 'em all "Happy Lucky Jade China Panda Dragon Garden House Kitchen #8888" now.

What is the "Cattleman's Code" anyhow?

Oh ... Bill Clinton's female Republican name is Deborah "I Own 4,739 Guns" Robinson.

This is neat ... just a random name generator using US Census data, which allows you to select the obscurity of names

Five common names

1. Philip Chaffin
2. David Tovar
3. Paul Nevels
4. Alan Kiely
5. Jacob Kilburn

Somewhat common

1. Eduardo Stile
2. Alejandro Vila
3. Jackie Lemond
4. Freddie Mckenrick
5. Wendell Lastinger

Not-so-common

1. Rod Collini
2. Fidel Balcitis
3. Kendrick Craige
4. Kendrick Graw
5. Alvaro Ameigh

Totally obscure

1. Kristofer Goodgine
2. Johnson Gerbs
3. Leif Delcine
4. Von Finkenbiner
5. Hyman Korslund

How would you put them to use? Imaginary professional names for your Sim City!

Law firm:
Chaffin, Tovar, Nevels, Kiely and Kilburn

Architecture firm:
goodgine gerbs delcine finkenbiner korslund

Just got lucky I guess :-D

They seem to have a fixation on the rodent and weasel families :)

In a side note, up until the point I left the service, all objective areas to be taken/captured were named after women. Ocassionaly, they were named after the wives of officers. Some of them did not like it very much when they heard that "Ellen has been PENETRATED".

Operation Awe-inspiring Vengeance
Operation ****ting Squirrel :-D (insert phecal material in there)
Operation Smouldering Mutual Fund
Operation Humping Osama 8-!
Operation Trigger-happy Soldier
Operation Incredibly Expensive Diplomacy :-c
Operation Unleashed Iguana 8-!

I could create the Cleveland Suburb Name generator. Basically, it would take a name of one of the few Cleveland suburbs that doesn't have "Heights" or "Hills" as a suffix, or a geographic feature in the area, and just add "Heights" or "Hills" to it.

Euclid Heights
Mentor Heights
Lyndhurst Heights
Eastlake Heights
Beachwood Heights
Chagrin Hills
Cedar Hills

Doesn't that sound Cleveland-ly?

What about Buffalo? Just slap together several Iroquois-sounding syllables. For Syracuse, a suburb would have to start with the letter "o", and include "ag" once or twice.

I'd also like to create a Texas place name generator. There's a certain ring that real Texan place names have. I can't quite explain it. Consider the imaginary city of Arlen, Texas, where King of the Hill takes place. "Arlen" just has a certain Texan sound. "Arlen, North Carolina" or "Arlen, Michigan" don't sound right.

Following are some random names off the top of my head that may or may not be cities or towns in Texas, but they certainly sound like they could be in Texas, and only Texas, to my ears.

Borine
Blayloch
Culberson
McNutt
Hereford
Lock n' Load
Spur
Burnett
Buckshot
General
Reload
Gus
Schreckenbacker
Hoss
Ricochet
Agua Muerto
Hebert
Buell
Thirty Aught Six
Charley
Rex
Pilsen
Caliente Tanks
Hawk n' Spit
Arbach
Schoop
Drip Gap
Burdine

You could imagine some cowboy saying to you, without moving their mouth, "I live on FM 2543 in Borine." You don't imagine them saying "I live off of Northland Drive in Lakewood Heights." Why does "Clint" seem so perfect as the name of a community outside of El Paso, but seem so out-of-place if it was the name of a DC suburb?

Lock n' Load, Texas? Definitely. Lock 'n Load, Ohio? Nope. Not even a Lock n' Load Heights outside of Cleveland. :)

Dan,

A city and name generator would probably be pretty easy for the Chicago area.

What you do is generate all the possible combinations of the following words:

Oak
Forest
Lawn
Hills
Barrington
Lakes
Estates
Park
Brook
Ville
River
Heights

This is the way it is mostly out here - example - I live in Oak Park, which is next to River Forest and Forest Park :p

When in the private sector, I used to make fun of my Vice President:
When he would leave work, I would announce "THE FOG IS LIFTING"
hmm....maybe that's why I'm no longer in the private sector..... :-0
He was a fun guy and took to the phrase and even began using it himself when he would leave....

Others:
The Eagle has Landed (when a well respected boss returns)
The Chicken has Flown the Coop

Maybe we could start naming Alefests after military operations, using the name generator ...

Toronto Alefest: Operation Midnight Ayatollah
Wisconsin Alefest: Operation Livid Badger
Chicago Alefest: Operation World-shaking Sweet Baby Jesus

Okay, I am thinking that the obvious angle has been missed:

Laefest Dead Kittens
Laefest Rumpy's Rampage
Laefest D.o.D.s Own Home Brew
Laefest Crash the Wedding of Nerudite and Elmo

and other Cyburbia-culture specific themes. :-D
