Clayton is a border suburb of St. Louis with a population of just over 15,000. Each day, its population mushrooms to over 70,000 as it functions as the county seat and a center of business in the metropolitan area. Take a look at St. Louis's "other downtown."

I love the brick ... it gives Clayton a feeling of solidity that many North American suburbs lack. Check out the walk-up apartments, too. Why can't an apartment developer build a low-rise complex that has a comfortable urban feel, laid out on a grid, instead of the usual buildings-around-a-parking-lot layout you see now?

I'm gradually being sold on the merits of The Lou.
