Critical Comments Desired on a Project of Mine.

It is said blatant rip offs are the sincerest form of flattery, or something like that. Thus, I want to introduce a project I am working on totally based upon and inspired by, and somewhat borrowed from the work of Mr. Dan Tasman, AICP. The town I live in, and which I have started to call home, has no established internet community/debate/activity in my observation.

I set out to fill that void with a non-political, agenda-free community web site (http://www.joetownwebs.com). It has been slowly developing and Dan has kindly been giving me pointers off and on for several months on web site development and how to configure a board. Thanks again Dan!

Lately, my wife and I have been house hunting and that has kept me from doing much work on the site. Now I have a chance to do some more work on the site. And very soon I am going to try to generate some traffic through advertising. (This is much easier said than done.)

So what I am asking of you, my fellow Cyburbians, is to take your vast board experience and offer some critical feed back to me about the project. Tell me what you would want in such a community web site if you were going to use it. What works and what doesn’t. Design comments are not as desired as form, function and content suggestions. I am not an artist (that should be obvious after viewing the site) – it is about as good as it will ever look.

What I am soliciting is what features you would desire in such a site like this for your community. I am trying to make sure it is feature rich, but at the same time ensure the maintenace of it doesn’t take over our lives. I am in this for the long haul. I want to give back to my community. This is one way for me to do this. I figure it may be years before it reaches its maximum traffic level.

The city of St. Joseph, Missouri is a very blue-collar, union, hard knock politics town of about 70K located in Northwest Missouri on the border with Kansas.

My goals for this site are:

A comfortable place where all those citizens that are inclined to get involved and speak their minds would find a place to discuss issues and learn about their town. I won't be the evil republican here that I am on Cyburbia.

I also want the general level of discourse to remain above the gutter, but not be so high-brow that some citizens fear to join in. PBS programming would be a good model for the tone and temperment I desire

You can respond here or email me at webmaster@joetownwebs.com

Thank you.

Looks great! I have wanted to see something similar here, but have not been ambitious enough to do anything about it.

You have a lot of links. If it were me, I'd probably only have a dozen or two (chamber, tourism, city, schools, library, organizations, etc. - leave out the personal and commercial sites). The only reason I would do that is to make maintenance a little easier.

Pretty neat site. It might be nice to set-up an advice or help board or section that instructs citizens where to go if they need brake/inspection tags for their vehicles; help with permitting, zoning, etc.; number for stray animals or noxious chemical spills.......you get the drift - info you would normally find in the front on the yellow pages. :)

We have been toying with the idea of a commmunity calendar that would allow many people to post what is going on in town that month. My worry is if you let everyone in you would get.. "yo dudes, party at jimmy's house, with lots of chicks."

Giff

Yes - I am somewhat worried about being named a co-conspiritor in paternity suits as a result of the calendar. This one will be controlled by me and people will have to submit events via email

I'm Famous - well sort of.

Last night yours truly was on the 6:00pm news. It appears that the web site was discovered by the local media. They called for an interview at 11:00am. The reporter was bright and really seemed to take an interest.

Later they ran a respectable and fairly deep 60 second feature and actually posted the site address and showed some film of the site and cut aways to happy kids surfing my site.

Within 5 to 10 minutes the number of registered users trippled. But very few have posted. Patience.

Oh, I also saw myself on TV - I think Fat Child Molestor in need of teeth whitening describes the look. Gawd! I hate being on camera. But how else to pimp the site? Time to hit the salad bar, get to the dentist and lay off the kidde porn. Or it could have been the picture tube, yeah...that's it!

Remember - no such thing as bad press. Well, unless it's about your kiddie porn habit...

Our council meetings are televised, everytime I see one I think, who is that fat bald guy...oh yeah thats me. The camera adds 30 pounds so lets see that makes me look about 320. Yep I agree time to hit the salad bar. Of course the salad bar is in one of those buffet places so that might not work....

Always angle your hips towards the camera. Straight on your hips always look bigger. (unless your beer belly is larger than your hips)
