We still have a 6 cd changer stereo (a Marantz even!) and I find for our dinner parties in the pre-pandemic world that I would always have the following on random

one Steely Dan Album
one bossa nova
one Brubeck
some euro-trash 80's band like Echo and the Bunnymen or The Beat
something quirky like The Bird and the Bee
smooth female singer like Everything But The Girl or Sade

I tend to select music based on the composition of the guests. Past selections have included:
The Rolling Stones' Hot Rocks 1964-71
Holst: The Planets
Blues Traveller
The Swimming Pool Q's
Miles Davis: Bitches Brew
REM: Eponymous

Jesse Cook (love his work, but if I have to choose Free Fall is my fave album)
John Williams scores (compilation)
Nora Jones (again, any of her albums)
Beethoven "greatest hits"

Depending on guests/time of year, the remaining two will vary among the following:
Now That's What I Call Music - Best of the 1980s type
Seasonal/Holiday music - jazz or classical
Action movie scores (compilation)
Best of Motown/the '60s (what my parents raised us on)

The Who - Who's Next
The Cult - Love
