Free Speech or TMI?

According to this article , a 47 year old female student filed a sexual harrassment complaint against a professor for discussing his sex life in graphic detail in a "Philosophy of Sex and Love" class. Personally, I think she needs to get a life and laid at the same time. I guess the question here is if the professor is exercising his free speech rights or revealing too much information?

Wow. All I can say is that if she's that uncomfortable with those sorts of comments in a classroom setting, she isn't going to make a very good psychologist. Can you imagine?

"Yes, I'm here to discuss difficulties in my personal life."

"Ok, but I'm not comfortable discussing that. How is your work life?"

Perhaps she should reconsider her choice of major, for, say, accounting. (No offense to accountants).

I think you are wrong. I think a lot of people will discuss sex more readily than they will discuss specific details of their finances. Sex gets brought up all the time on Cyburbia but I have yet to hear about anyone's salary. If she can't discuss sex, she certainly can't discuss money. Accounting is clearly not the field for her.

This thread should be named, "Why people who don't know what class there signing up for, should go to hell".
-Come on, I think I'm going to puke.

"Marion, who dropped the weekly class, says she has contacted an attorney and intends to pursue her charges if the university does not sanction Soble in some way. "I do not think porn should be thrust onto students under the age of 21," she says. "I want this guy stopped.""

Lady your 47. Go fight some other cause, stupid, like free the kittens from KFK(Korean Fried Kitten). I want this women stopped, where's Larry Flint? Oh man would somebody just shoot this woman!!!:c:

Ok, perhaps some other field. Accounting was merely pulled from the top of my head. Politcal science, perhaps?? The point was that if she has difficulty talking about difficult subjects, or even hearing about them, she may not be able to give her future clients the full measure of attention.

If you can't handle frank & open discussions about sex in a class based on sexuality, then you do not have enough maturity to even be in college! My favorite part was her saying that she didn't want porn forced on people under 21. Whether you like it or not, porn is a part of many cultures. She's probably just jealous of her profs sex life ;)

Universities are so paranoid about bad press and lawsuits that I'm sure they'll give in and sanction the prof just to shut her up!

What a crock of *&^%! This woman needs to get a clue. It is a class on philosophy and sexuality. I don't think I want to know that the professor has masturbated until it hurt, but I'd take the class.

How can this woman function in society?!! I mean there are half naked women and men in every magazine on the newsstand (except at Wal-Mart where she must shop.) I see girls not yet teens in low rise jeans with their thong underwear showing. Sexuality is so prevalent that what is pornographic today will be the norm for my children, scary thought.

I wonder if the class went something like this ...

Every Sunday morning, we wake up extra early, before first flight. We creep down the staircase, silent as mice, and then break the silence with the screams of our lovemaking. And then we collapse, cover ourselves with woolen shawls and fill our bellies with ham. My love-ah then lights an evening pipe in satisfaction, his body glistening from eating close to two pounds of ham.

One day I whisked my love-ah away, to a room at the prestigious Wesley Arms Hotel, bringing along some of my favorite erotic Persian lithographs. For three glorious days, I handed my love-ah plump strawberries and smoked duck meat. She purred and giggled under the weight of my thrusting body, her mouth agape with a mixture of pleasure, longing, and duck meat.

Agreed about the good taste, but what about talking about things you see in the public realm?

I had a girlfriend who majored in feminism at Smith. She used to tell me the lesbian prof would hand out material discussing the ethical ramifications of lesbians engaging in SM & BD. Of course, no judgement was passed because only women were involved. Also, nobody threatened the professor over the discussion because how could the proffessor be the harraser? Being male and discussing sexuality makes you an abuser and a harasser?

This proffessor has tenure I bet, so the worst thing he faces is a nasty little letter in his file. Good thing about tenure, its better than union membership for keeping your job! :)

Hey, I wasn't ragging on you. I was just ragging on the 47 year old twit that the article was about. Perhaps she has reason to be offended at the fact that the class is not adequately described but I think even considering a 'sexual harassment' lawsuit is ridiculous. I had a professor confess he was homosexual in a poli sci class to make the point that in some states he would not be allowed to teach due to his sexual orientation. Gee, imagine that -- a gay guy living in the San Francisco Bay Area. Gosh, how Shocking!!! (NOT). I think I would have a lot more reason to think my professor in poli sci wouldn't talk about his sex life than a woman taking a class with the word "sex" in the title.

The woman is in the right major. Folks with degrees in psychology are often incredibly sexually uptight. In my personal experience, most psychologists got a degree in psychology because they fundamentally do not understand human beings and they were hoping someone could explain it to them. On the whole, they are some of the most neurotic and ate up folks on the planet.

I met a woman last year with her Master's in Psychology -- who grew up in a home where her dad had schizophrenia and DID NOT TELL HIS FAMILY!!! -- and she was changing careers to get away from all the nutcase shrinks she worked around. I ran my hypothesis past her and she agreed, completely. There are some fine shrinks out there. But, on the whole, if you need help understanding yourself, your relationships, or other people, I recommend that you ask someone who fundamentally understands people and not someone who got a degree in it, hoping to get a clue. (Sorry psych majors/shrinks.)

I could not agree with you more. The one psycho I know has so many issues, and sex is a major issue. What I don't understand is she's actually gotten her s.o. (my pal) to think moving to Austria to be with her is a good idea and brainwashed him into not even being able to answer for himself.. wait, the woman is a genius!! LOL, not really, I hate to see him like this: he's not allowed to eat red meat, drink beer, or laugh in general at anything that we here would laugh at (you know, the really funny stuff). It's sad, she's taken his will to live, made him think it was his choice, and he's thinking of marrying her!

A little bit of sin is good for the soul. Plants can't root without a little dirt, and people can't either. (Australian dirty pun intended) The tendency of most psychologists to want to live lives that are more sterile than their laboratory is really, really sick indeed -- in my not so humble opinion.
