As a prelude to the upcoming Geography Awareness week, lets see who is the first to answer this question correctly:

In terms of land area, and in rank order from largest to smallest, what are the largest five islands in the world?

Let's make this challenging: No looking up websites or googleing the names. Do it from the top of your head or looking at maps only.

Edited for ranking

Total guess off the top of my head....

Antarctica
Australia
Greenland
Japan
New Zealand

EDIT: OK...I looked it up....don't use continents is my hint to the next guesser!

Well for starters, Antarctica and Australia are continents, not islands and Japan and New Zealand are comprised of more than one island.

Like I said did it off the top of my head.....and realized after I looked it up where my mistakes were....should have thought about it a bit more instead of posting in between bites of lunch. ;)

OK, I meant to say what are the Top 5 Islands...in rank order!

Going by that, one of you has the right islands, but two are in the wrong order.

If I remember 10th grade geography correctly, we were always taught that Australia was the worlds largest island, so large in fact that is also considered a continent. But also keep in mind that I'm a product of the South Carolina public school system, so there's probably more than a good chance that I'm wrong.

I'm still sticking to Gilligan's Island though.

I agree with you on that one.
An inescapable island full of hidden caves and lagoons, super smart gorillas, Russian Cosmonauts and washed up guest stars has to be freaking huge.
