"Once forbidden." China has been considered open for quite a while, but only in recent years has relations between Vietnam and the US warmed to a point where that nation can be seen as open.

The last closed Asian country is North Korea, and even then it's not that hard to get into Pyongyang; Americans can easily arrange a tour and enter the country by air or rail from China.

Hanoi developed a lot of its present character (at least in the old city) during the French Occupation late 19th/early 20th century. Hence the decadent ye old colonie look
