The Dutch have started on the construction of a huge, new community planned to consist of 18,000 dwelling units for some 50,000+ inhabitants and located 25 minutes (not miles but minutes) east of downtown Amsterdam on 6 newly created islands right in and on the IJmeer (IJlake)!

Talk about "Urban Planning and Development"! You can read all about it on http://www.dds.nl/~IJburg/
Anyone interested in talking about this project and what it might teach us?

(Dan: 15 September 2006) Since this thread was revived and the link is bad, you can use Google to find current sites about IJburg. Some good references:

The tram line from central station to Ijburg is on operation. Because Ijburg is under sea level, tracks are designed to make cars able to use it if emergency. Keywod for photos by google images "Ijburg tram".
