Hello-
I hope somebody can help me out w/a quote I am looking for. What planner/designer said that footpaths should only be created after observing the patterns people wear into the grass? I thought it was Kevin Lynch, but I looked through "Site Planning" and didn't find it. I'm looking for the name and the title of the book it appeared in if possible, as I want to get an exact quote.

Thanks!

Gee, I heard that quote often during my undergrad days at the University of Waterloo. I've used it several times in open space and trail planning sessions and have associated it with Dr. Robert Dorney. Perhaps it was Ian McHarg in "Design with Nature" who first coined it. Good luck.
