A new game, invented by yours truly. Here is the idea - find an origin and destination, using Mapquest ( http://www.mapquest.com ), that will result in the most "hops" - that is, turns, merges, exits, and other changes from road to road. You must use the default "fastest trip" setting; no avoiding limited access highways or toll roads.

I've started off with something simple - Key West, Florida to Bellingham, Washington. 3613.26 miles, 40 hops.

A variant might include a trip with the greatest amount of hops for its length. The Key West-Bellingham run has a "hop index" of 90.33 - that's miles per hop. The lower the hop index, the better.

Should a bonus hop be awarded for something cool, like a leg on a ferry?

Mapquest chokes on trips from the continental US to Alaska, but does just fine with originating points in Canada. It won't route trips from the lower 48 to Hawaii, either.

May I suggest a minor addition to the rules?

You must use one of the towns/ places mentioned in the previous post as the starting point, and once a place is mentioned in two posts it is off limits as a starting point or a destination. (Like the never ending thread)

Using these rules I propose

Bellingham Washington to Saint John's Newfoundland and Labrador.

Bonus for ferry trip

Distance = 4496 miles
Hops = 35
Average distance between hops= 128.4 miles

So youre drinking at McSorley's Old Ale House in NYC and you and your buddies decide that a trip to Tijuana is a great idea. From Mc Sorleys to San Diego is 2816.15 miles or 46 hours, 2 minutes.

42 hops
67.05 miles per hop

Note: I posted before I read Donk's new rule.

I tried Barrow AK to Key West, FL - it cried. I really pushed it when I tired Adak (The Furthest West Aleutian Island City) Alaska to KW-FLA. It just cried.

Short Hops

Tunica, Mississippi to Forrest City, Arkansas

Two cities only 30 miles apart, yet the Mapquest trip route is 9 hops totalling 85.65 miles and 1 hour 43 minutes.

9.516 miles per hop

Since there was no minimum distance, I picked a route I know quite well:

Mukilteo, WA to Port Townsend WA.
Total distance of driving: 35.43 miles
Nubmer of "hops": 14
Avergage miles per hop: 2.53
Two ferry bonuses, baby! Oh yeah!

Port Townsend, Washington to North East Carry, Maine.

54 hops, including a crossing into Canada and back into the United States. 3318.72 miles, or a HI of 63.80

BTW, Mapquest also chokes hard on Saint-Pierre and Miquelon. Zoom in on the island, and it disappears!

DENIED! Two Mapquest queries were used to make the trip. The default routing Mapquest uses from El Paso to Appleton has 31 hops, and no ferry.

BTW, Mapquest cries like a little girl who has had her candy taken away when you try an Appleton WI to Angle Inlet MN trip.

Keeping consistent with Donk's added rule of using a city in the previous post here is mine.

Appleton WI. to Martha's Vineyard MA

1246.33 miles
21 hours, 14 minutes
45 hops

BOO HOO only 27.6 miles per hop

BUT I get bonus points for an 8 mile Ferry ride out to the island. How many points do I get for that???

Trepassney, Newfoundland to Barrow, Alaska

32 hops. A 215 hour drive. 10564.35 km

Unfortunately, directions at the end get a little vauge. Mapquest bleeds, or at least it just got tired.

28: Go North on DALTON HWY to local road. 547.64 km
29: Go West on local road to local road. 240.11 km
30: Go West on local road to local road. 188.92 km
31: Go North on local road to local road. 90.28 km
32: Go North on local road. 122.62 km

I've always laughed at the irrational directions that Mapquest uses to get to the destination, specially the wonderful exit/enter highway feature... well at least that happened quite a lot the few times I used it a few months ago...

I think the New Mexico version of Mapquest can be quite interesting.

4. Go TOWARDS THE MOUNTAINS to old Montoya place. 5 minutes.
5. Go SOUTH to where the corral used to be. 25 minutes.
6. Go UP on good road to Charlie's ... or it used to be Charlie's. 3 beers.
7. Go THAT WAY on raw desert to dead horse. 4 cigarettes.
8. Go DOWN along arroyo to mobile home park. 1 beer.
