You all really ought to be careful what you put on this strand. Some of it's pretty nasty. I read this at work and I'm ashamed to open it here with some of the nudie shots you put out there.

That is one vote against planner porn.

IMHO - Things have been a little more "edgy" lately than I am comfy with. But so is democracy.

It's all those young whipper snappers causing a ruckus around here....

Not to be a snot, but should we *really* be reading this at work anyway?

:\

BTW, I am referring to myself here also...I really shouldn't be posting about my search for the ultimate puppy either. I guess it's different if it is the other threads relating to planning/zoning, but the whole Friday Afternoon Club isn't really meant to be work related (IMHO).

"Not to be a Snot". Don't even go down that road.
There are two pictures of girls with their breasts and "lower extremities" scratched out. How is that humorous? Sometimes these forums have some great ideas but othertimes, like this, they're just really disappointing. Home or work, (at the risk of sounding like a prude) it's nasty and inappropriate.

Stories about your search for a puppy for one thing. Pictures of nude women are something else altogether.

BTW - I never said they were humorous or appropriate. I am just saying there are a lot of stuff that 98.978% of the users on here post while at work that aren't work related, which technically isn't appropriate either (like my puppy saga, which is inappropriate, albeit in a different way than posting nudie pictures)

((Edited because I can't type today, and to state that I am not mugbug, nor do I eat puppies....))

Fine. Just wanted to express my disappointment. I know it's the Friday AFternoon Club, people, but some semblance of professionalism, please?!
And on that note, I'd like to end this discussion.

That would be a good trick. Around here threads tend to die a natural death with the occasional Lazarus trick.

So back to porn and planners...should we have a don't post nasties anywhere but the FAC, and a don't open at work if you are a bit on the prudish side warning posted?

Just a quick note from the board admin ... sorry, but I was packing up and cleaning the house all day.

One of Cyburbia's rules, which I'll admit is difficult to find, is ...

No pornographic, sexually offensive, explicit or other objectifying material. First, it's off topic. Secondly, people use this Web site at school and work, and we'd like the users to be able to enjoy it without fear of retribution.

The way I've enforced that rule in the FAC in the past was:

1) If someone posts a pic, it shouldn't get the viewer fired if they're at work. For the most part, some tittilation is tolerated in the workplace (i.e. a bikini in a banner ad for a weight loss product), but porn isn't. I'm not going to define "offensive," but posts shouldn't make users feel uncomfortable (as opposed to challenging their beliefs), excepting the hypersensitive.

2) With pictures, there shouldn't be visible genitalia, buttocks, or female aerolae.

I apologize for being lax and not deleting the two cheesecake shots in question. I didn't find the images offensive, but I did feel they just stepped over the boundaries of some difficult-to-define collective comfort level. By no means am I a puritan, but I do understand that, like it or not, this Web site is seen as a professional resource, and the standards one would expect here are higher than on a bulletin board intended for mainly social discussions.

I won't apologize for our collective silliness in portions of the bulletin board that are intended for off-topic discussions. Yes, Cyburbia is more-or-less thought of by many as a professional site, but it's not sponsored by the APA, or any other professional organization. Cyburbia is an eight year old web site that grew from a personal Web site of a geeky planning grad student to what you see here. Cyburbia, a site that I own but which is maintained as something of an informal cooperative, is intended to provide a public service to planners and others interested in the built environment., The bulletin boards are intended to provide a place for both serious discussions about planning and the built environment (a conference equivalent of workshops and seminars), as well as casual discussion about other topics (a conference equivalent of receptions). Either way, the forums aren't intended be a stuffy, stilted roundtable of hardcore planning wonks.

From the admin ... well, no more nudie pictures. Lay off of Muggie, too, unless he's being a jerk.

The appropriate place to discuss board policies is in the Forum Issues and Help section. Please followup there for a general discussion regarding appropriate postings.

Also, if I say "appropriate" one more time, please slap me.
