As a newbie here, has this type of discussion taken place before? Mars would be the easiest case to start with, there's a lot of literature and speculation out there on it. Venus would be a tougher case but it could probably be done as well.

Or, there are more radical solutions for more living space - a Dyson sphere or Niven's compromise of a Ringworld...

Heinlein also discusses these ideas and what happens when the terraforming equipment fails. (Farmer in the Sky)

In Podkayne of Mars and Red Planet he proposes a reality where Mars is habitable, with minor modifications and low pressure space suits.

Plus, those darn asteroids...

For long-term survival of the human race, we need to get our eggs out of one basket. A 1 or 2 mile diameter asteroid impacting the earth would pretty much wipe out all higher life forms... including us.

I can't imagine how 6,2 BILLION inhabitants can fit well in the US territories( unless the US conquers the entire surface of the earth). One would need to build megacities of hundreds of floors high to fit that amount of people and still preserving important things like forests and farms and other things.

Another aspect, is exploration. How would America be if Columbus had never explored and reached America?
Mankind has already reached the Moon, we left it dumped, mainly because of politicians with a lack of sight for the future.

The posibility for an asteroid hitting the earth is quite important, just look at the Dinosaurs, do we want to end like them?
