New Guy nerves? (he said hopefully)
Unfortunately no.

When I was driving The Girl to school last year, we got in a routine to get a biscuit on the way. Now that she drives, I have abandoned that short-lived tradition & eat a multigrain, fruit filled cereal bar for breakfast. It is not the same.

What's remarkable about those #'s is we're at 7k with no end of the year post padding. It appears the Great XenForo Migration of 2019 was a boon.

It's coke, no matter what the carbonated beverage might actually be, and still the occasional pop.

I'm closer to LA, AL and Gulf of Mexico than most of the state. I'm closer to New Orleans than the state capital.

In that case, I'm only technically ~50 miles (as the canada goose flies) from the US/CAD border in the middle of Lake Erie.

But, alas, no Tim Hortons in my immediate area, though there are some in the greater Metro.
My house is about 16 miles from the Canadian border (my in-laws house is literally on the border).

I pass two or three Tim Horton's locations on my 8 mile morning commute, depending on which route I take.

My house is about 410 miles to Houghton, MI which is about the same distance as it is to Bowling Green, Kentucky or Washington, DC or Allentown, Pennsylvania or Utica, New York.

It's coke or soda you heathens!

I have no cool border stories to tell you. I'm about 3 hours from Mexico, California, New Mexico, and 4-5 from a few more states no one cares about.

@JNA, I updated the general list to include links to all the RTDNTOTO posts to date. I always end up looking for them, so I thought it might be easier if it all lives within the update that shows up often! Hope you don't mind. I also highlighted the post-a-thon numbers. I counted the last two days of the year for that...

I'd kill to have 'bathrobe, slippers, and unshaved stubble day' at work. I'd settle for 'sweats and black concert tee shirt day, though.
I have been known to wear my LL Bean slippers to work. They have a rubber sole :)

Contrary to popular belief, I like the University of Michigan. I dislike their football team one week or so out of the year, but generally enjoy Ann Arbor and the University.
Hey, I think that Columbus is a great city, OSU has a terrific campus, and the OSU Marching Band is phenominal. I just feel the opposite about the football team.

I wore snow boots to the office, then switched to house shoes (slippers) for indoors. They were navy blue and looked like penny loafers. (I wasn't going to wear your typical "ladies" slippers; found 'em in the mens section.)

all during the workplace attire debacle (in which I was the most professionally, though colorfully, attired person in the building) no one ever said boo about them

Well I had to crush their hopes and dreams. The lot is freaking 105 feet wide with 10' setbacks on either side. They needed to encroach on them BOTH with the house plan they picked. If you cannot manage to fit a house in an 85 foot wide envelope, you have issues....

So at 12:30 this morning the dog starts barking her head off. Usually two things start her barking at night: either there’s a critter in the yard, or the neighbors behind us have turned on their back light. So I go down to see what the deal is, and sure enough the neighbors have every single light on in their house. But when I look out the rear window I get treated to a view of the neighbors in the family room enjoying….sexy time!
Um, why do we need all the lights on in the house for that? Secret exhibitionists?

What a classic footnote in a court brief filing - CITY OF NEWARK, Plaintiff, v. CITY OF NEW YORK et al., Defendants.

Rather, this case concerns an unlawful program of “coerced” migration.
This application challenges Defendants’ ill-conceived, surreptitious efforts to shift the burdens associated with the homeless to other communities in this nation, by forcing SOTA recipients to accept the proverbial “offer they can’t refuse.”1
Here is the Fotnote -

1 In The Godfather, Vito Corleone remarks that he will make uncooperative studio head Jack Woltz, “An offer he can't refuse.” This initially appears innocent enough, as the viewer may believe this refers to a deal Woltz simply can't pass up, something so good that Woltz will just have to say yes. Within a few scenes, the viewer learns the truth, that the “offer” was no offer at all, it was really a command, “Do what we say or else.” Woltz (and the viewer) learn the hard way when, after Woltz refuses the “offer,” he wakes up (screaming) with the (bloody) head of his prized horse in his bed.
I added the scene details in the ( ).

Winter 1989. I was a lonely, somewhat socially inept single guy. First apartment of my own, about 2,000 miles from "home home". The building was typical of early 1970s construction, with thin walls and very little insulation. A couple, about my age lived upstairs from me. They had a very squeaky bed, and the headboard must have been right up against the wall.

Aaaaaaand here's the third Chinese spam call of the day. Spoofed numbers in the 212 area code, so RoboKiller isn't catching them.

Yesterday, a strange thought crossed my head -- I should learn Norwegian. I pretty much have zero Norwegian blood, and I don't plan on going to Norway or Minnesota anytime soon. It's supposed to be an easy language to learn, because the vocabulary isn't that much different than English, and word order is supposedly exactly the same. Sure, Spanish would be more useful, and I can already sort-of-kind-of read it, but how cool would it be just to speak a language you'll probably never hear in the wild?

Afrikaans is also supposedly very easy for English speakers to pick up, too. It's basically simplified, genderless Dutch, with a strong English influence. I doubt I'll be at some backyard braai in Pretoria in the near future, though.

So Jersey. While NYC deserves the criticism it's getting for the SOTA program (appears to be funded from non-federal sources so there aren't many requirements), this is also a failure of the City of Newark to enforce habitability codes on its housing stock. The city has a population of about 285K and during the past 10 years there has been no more than 12 code enforcement officers working at any given time. The average age of the housing stock is over 75 years old and has suffered from disinvestment. Ownership rates are less than 25% so it is largely rental properties owned by landlords living elsewhere.

Also Newark and Essex County have a very dysfunctional homeless shelter and outreach system. Newark Penn Station is the de facto homeless shelter. I work in neighboring Hudson County and we have a much more unified approach to homelessness, shelter, and permanent housing.

Consider me jealous. The Tim Horton's here was only open for a year. It was in a location that was less than ideal for capturing commuter traffic. The Tim Horton's/Dunkin' Donuts line in upstate New York is roughly in the same location as the pop/soda isogloss.

There's about 700 Tim Horton's locations in the US. About 250 of them are in the Buffalo area. :wow:

I wouldn't. The socio-political association of this language by non-South Africans is bad.

There is a particular house in my neighborhood where if I were to run past between around 5:00 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. during the week I was almost guaranteed to see the thirtysomething woman who lived there standing topless in front of the bathroom window while she did her hair or makeup or whatever. She sold the house a few years back, which looking back at my running logs over the years seems to correspond with me no longer running that particular route nearly as often.

I would love to see school systems attach the long LED whip bar lights to the little flip out stop sign on the buses to get cars to stop. If a light whip flaps out in front of you and you need to stop to prevent from hitting, you might be more obliged to stop.

The problem with those is that they do physically go out into the other lane. I don't think that's legal to do in most states.

anyone want a bagel shandwich?

sometimes I treat myself to a bagel sandwich in the morning at the local bagel shop. If one of our many homeless people are sitting in the park next door, I will buy them a bagel too with orange juice or hot cider so today there was a guy in the park so I got 2 of everything and when I came out he was gone

so there goes today's act of random kindness but I did give to the guy who administrates our HOME funds so it's almost the same thing, lol right @kjel

I watched a little of the SNL prime time Christmas special last night. It is crazy how things have changed in a world of excessive political correctness and people being offended by every little thing. They showed several older skits that would never fly with today's audiences. Same goes for Disney+ There are some movies that have notices on them because the content may be insensitive to some viewers.

I wonder where it will stop. Do I need to stop parking my truck in the parking lot because a coworker is an environmentalist?

Agreed and those skits can be "more funnier" too.

Same with older Looney Tunes & Roadrunner & Speedy Gonzalez cartoons

You can still park your truck in the parking lot, not just in the compact or electric charging spaces...and not because your coworker is an environmentalist, because its the right & civil thing to do.

We don't have electric charging stations yet.

Local parade was canceled because a "Son's of the Confederacy" group signed up to march in the Parade. This particular group is not a white supremacist group, but that is how they are characterized. What they are is Civil War history buffs and reenactment actors. However there was threats of protects and civil unrest if this group was permitted to march in the parade. So instead they canceled the parade.

"They could never make that today." It's something my wife and I say a lot when we see pre-Gamergate/Ferguson TV shows and movies.
People are now up in arms over the Peloton selfie commercial. I can't stand it because I can't stand Peloton commercials in general, with bikes front and center in multi-million dollar Mies Van Der Rohe houses and Upper East Side apartments. Others are fuming because they see the husband's gift of a Peloton as a kind of body shaming, and reinforcement of unrealistic beauty standards. Also, some say her facial expression looks "scared", like she's afraid of the repercussions if she can't finish a Spartan Ultra in 10 hours by the next Christmas. They're really reading too much into it. If the Peloton commercial started off with the wife/partner being overweight, I could get it from a body positivity standpoint, but she's slim from the start.

For those outside the US who probably haven't seen the commercial:

Offensive? Let's go back about 35 years.

Or back to the 1960s.
