We are going to crush 6k at least. Let's just hope my wife works over New Year's and then I can be sure to get us at least an extra 1k on NYE. 2013-2015 were some good NYE post-a-thons.

So the place with the "paml" reading yesterday has a special guest this afternoon. . . The Mystical Owl will be performing a reading.

This is what I'm picturing:

We had a snowy white owl in our front yard once for days that stared down our then toddler son who would creepily stare out the window at it - creepiest cool thing ever - I was waiting for the Hogwarts letter to slip under the door

Who wants to help fund the GoFundMe to help pay off my student loans? Donations made at the $500 level will get an original signed print. $1000 patrons will get a one-of-a-kind Sculpy sculpture. $5000 lifers will get a personalized limerick.

At what level does one receive the bookbag, or better yet the complete dandy_warhol seasons 1-3 DVD collection?

At the LifeTime+ level for a pledge of $5432.10 you have the choice of the bookbag, 2 disc set of me singing Polka Speed Metal, or the seasons 1-3 DVD collection with 2 hour bonus footage of me sitting at the computer hitting refresh to see if anyone responded to my posts.

I just finished the American Community Survey from the US Dept of Commerce. Fun times.

The questions are based on your current residence. I had to estimate/guess for some of the answers, because we just moved in over the weekend. No idea on the history (other than when built). So my numbers will make no sense to them, I'm sure.

No religion questions. I was hoping to write in Jedi Knight.

Sometimes I wonder what our system of government would look like if we just started today. No context, no political history. Just created a nation today.

My guess is that it wouldn't look like what we have. Which says something to me.

*Note, student loans suck. We should really look into why college costs so much these days (it is administrators). Then see if we can see why healthcare is so expensive (its administrators). Then realize that costs have risen because we continue to pay people to bring no value to organizations, do not have the proper skills, or have retired and been rehired because they know the CEO.

How did we get by when a school only had one principal, a college only had one dean, and a hospital had only one President? I guess things were just easier then. Now we have social media? ;)

How many Cyburbians have security cameras at their houses?
I've considered adding some to our house but haven't really put much thought into it yet. We don't see package thefts in our neighborhood or daytime home invasions but if that changed, I might really investigate it. I know a lot of the houses in the neighborhood just east of us, which is much more dense and has had ongoing problems with package thefts over the past few years, have put up cameras. My in-laws house sits pretty far off the road and is very well shielded from view by trees and a some small hills. Like most of their neighbors, they are often gone for months at a time so there are not many eyes on their property other than a friend they pay to come by once a week and check on things. We've been trying to convince them to put up some cameras at their place.

For $5,000 can I get a share of your earnings over the next 10 years?

Our hood reportedly has had some package and mail thefts - I haven't been impacted by it, and I'm one house down from an entrance to the hood, but whatever. The Fabulous Boys Next Door™ and the lady across the street have installed Ring systems with cameras, though, and she's also installed a locked mailbox. I've installed dusk-to-dawn LED lights at the front door, garage pedestrian door, and ground-level rear door, along with a motion-sensor floodlight on the front facade above the sidewalk from the driveway to the front door, but security was a secondary concern for those - my ability to see things at night that might trip me was the primary concern.

Well I think I'm probably NC CZO certified, but the results won't come back until Friday maybe. That test was kind of a joke though. I'm a little annoyed that I sat through so much class and it cost so much money (that I didn't pay for but still) for a 30 question test that was one of the easiest tests I've ever taken in my life.

Sounds eerily similar to the AICP process. :)

AICP test was hard. It was pointless and annoying, but it was hard. Mainly because it asked questions about stuff that no one in the planning field ever uses. And maybe I didn't study enough.

I have yet to use the knowledge that there are 562 native tribes in the US, but thank you for making me learn that.

The lady across the street installed 3 LED dusk-to-dawn lights on front of her house. They shine directly on our house as well. There is no reason to have night lights inside my house.

I've thought about getting a Ring doorbell and thinking about it more last night. Yesterday, Mrs. P received a package (a large box) and it was left on the front porch by UPS. When we got home, the top had been opened but all contents were inside (bedspread & packing notes). Either the UPS guy held it by the top and it accidently opened OR somebody looked inside and didn't want a bedspread.

I've been watching this show on Netflix called Longmire. There's a really interesting relationship between the local Cheyenne reservation and the county law enforcement (Sheriff Longmire). Now I'm super interested in Native American culture. I did learn that there aren't actually any Cheyenne reservations in Wyoming where the show takes place. There are only two. One is in Montana, the other in Oklahoma.

My neighbor across from me and I have the same LED dusk to dawn lights on the front of our homes. He has a security camera that covers his driveway, sidewalk, the street, my sidewalk, stoop, and door. The neighbors like the fact that we have a well illuminated stretch of block at night because the street lights are far apart and one always seems to be not working.

Most people don't get packages delivered in my 'hood. They will disappear or the delivery person will drive by and not actually leave the package. All of my deliveries come to the office.

I can see it from your perspective.

I did have to take an extra 30 seconds (45 seconds total) to answer the question about calculating FAR for a specified lot and house.

It was warranted as I had only been a professional City Planner for 9 years at that point and only calculated FARs officially, maybe, 700 times. I may have forgotten how to calculate the 2D area of stacked rectangles.

giff - you need to clean your garage, man.

At this pace, we’ll have about 8,500 posts in this thread by the end of the year. Go us!

A few weeks ago, my wife bought a huge Yeti water bottle. She drinks a lot of water, and carries it absolutely everywhere. On a road trip to the Berkshires yesterday, I was disappointed with my old made-in-the-USA non-insulated NUMTOT-lustworthy Denver RTD map water bottle - it didn’t keep my water cold, and there was a little bit of an odd taste despite it being pretty much sterile.

I looked on Amazon at Yeti alternatives, like RTIC and the various one-off only-on-Amazon brands. “You don’t drink enough water to justify a new bottle”, she says. But ,,, GEAR. It’s all about the gear. We have a bunch of non- insulated bottles we don’t use — good ones from Kleen Kanteen, Sigg, and the like — and a bunch would go into the “free shit” pile at work if I got an RTIC. Hey, it’s just simplifying my life.

Going grocery shopping in a bit while she studies, and then check out Lowe’s to see if they “reset” the tool department for Craftsman. Probably not — stores tend to update their Upstate NY locations late in the game. Then off to get some gravel for the driveway. I hate gravel driveways, but they're the default around here, even in the city. Ours took a real beating this past winter, and I’m kind of anal about maintaining ours so it doesn’t turn “authentic”.
It truly is all about the gear! Have you considered applying your rugged skill set to upgrading one of your existing water bottles? Maybe applying some insulation and other features like carabiner points and stickers? You'd earn repurposing points.

I want some, but I want enough to where the wireless ones won't be cost effective. I need access to my attic to run the wiring to the cameras and then to a central location in the house. My previous house here was broken into, and we surprisingly had some break ins in my new neighborhood a while back.

There was an REI near my hotel in Chapel Hill over the week. I went yesterday to spend my $30 dollar dividend and settled on an 80 dollar camp chair. Did I need this? No, not really. Did I want it? HELL YES. It is infinitely better than the 3 dollar foam pad I was using. I probably won't take it backpacking, but for car camping or kayaking, it's definitely coming with me.

We had a prowler last night or early this morning. Someone broke into boxes of construction supplies in our driveway. Doesn't look like anything was taken. Security cameras did not record anything. Low lifes.
I haven't heard the term 'prowler' in 40 years.

The extent of my knowledge of things I learned for the AICP exam goes something like this usually: "There was some court case about that a long time ago where they determined XYZ."

Chick-fil-A can sell you a side of bacon, all by itself. It looked like it was two slices' worth. Thanks to my four-year old for requesting it, and to me for completely forgetting to feed him breakfast at home this morning, now I know.

Living in northern Maine, I am not sure where the keys are to my house - we usually do a search and destroy mission before we start renting because folks from away freak at the concept of not locking up.

Oddly enough, we lock ourselves in at night but never lock when we leave - most people are like that here.

There are deed restrictions in subdivisions that require lights out after 10 PM to protect the dark sky.

Before I got keyless ignition, I used to leave my keys in the ignition - the only reason I bring my keys into the house is because the batteries wear out faster if you leave them in the car. In winter, people leave the car running when going into the store and if it's summer and you have a dog, it's running with AC while you go into the store with the dog in the car. I only lock my car when I am hiking.

People in Maine (particularly where you are) are just nice. Come to Ohio. We will show you what it means to ignore and not care about you. ;)
