To paraphase an old saw- If you can remember the '80's, you weren't there. I was in high school and college at that time, and don't remember much outside of the music and hill street blues. :-D

I remember spending most of the 80's without cable TV,
no money for LP/33 or CD's,
6 yrs as a ski bum in CO,
late 80's in Grad School - even less money or fun.

Pee Wee's Playhouse.

Thundercats.

Getting locked in the house while the parents were gone.

Starting fires while the parents were gone.

Walking over the hot coals of a fire I thought was out (stupid kid) and not being able to walk for a week.

The great FMC chemical spill that was next to our school. I was temporarily blind for the day. Dammit, I brought a run over frog for show and tell.

Fun with electric fences.

Ahhhhh the memories go on.....................

While this certainly shocked me, last years passing of Joe Strummer, and the 2001 death of Benjamin Orr (From The Cars) got my attention more, it was more the music that I listened too, and even though both were about 20 years my senior, they just seemed closer to me, guess this is getting old.

After rereading this thread, no one has mentioned the ultimate thing from the early 80's

Roller skating

In memory of Ms Branigan, a reverse direction all skate is definitely called for. ;)

I lived the 80's as a teenager and remember it all too clearly. Please let the low rise with fake wear marks jean thing last a bit longer, the ex GF made me buy a pair of obscenely expensive jeans that I'd like to get some wear out of before they become the equivalent of acid washed jeans. :-$

Did anyone happen to catch Last Comic Standing last night when the one comedian was joking about kids complaining about Playstation 2 being "hard". He said "Hard? HARD? let me tell you, these kids nowadays are nothin' but a bunch of creampuffs they've got it so easy. Why, back when I was their age we used to have to run uphill both ways and jumping over barrels to get Donkey Kong. Save Game? Hah, when you died in my day it meant going all the way back to magic hippo land...and we liked it!"

My first real concert was Laura Branigan at the now demolished Warwick Musical Theater. :(

It seems like Generation X has already gone through their nostalgia for the 80's phase. As far back as the early 90's college students were name-dropping obscure 80's songs and tv shows, and collecting cheesy 80's trinkets - look at Reality Bites.

The reaction against the 90's hasn't really happened yet. Radio stations still play Stone Temple Pilots non-stop and most radio rock bands still sound like watered down Nirvana. A flannel shirt and floppy hair doesn't look that out of style. In the 90's the worst thing you could do would be to look or sound 80's in any way.

As far as music, now that most agressive stuff sucks (nu-metal) bands like The Darkness are going to get more popular. I'm guessing in the next few years the "guitar hero" will be back. He'll be good but the hundreds of clones copying him will lead to another 80's situation.

For those of you with all the vinyls in plastic bags down in the basement, maybe you could revive them by using them as coasters for huge beer mugs or as placemats!

It'll be a great way to keep reminders of the 1980s in your life and in your home. :)

I was so 80's I owned my own skates. Maybe it just has not gotten to your area yet? There has to be one in edmonton, the other place to check is the local arena, they mauy have a few pairs hidden in the backroom.

I know lots of places around here are 20 years behind the times. Truckers caps, western shirts, wallets with chains are not being worn for their current fashion value, they've never gone out of style.

Head to Buffalo, and in some neighborhoods you'll still see late 1970s-style groders, heshers and mötörheads that are not even trying to be ironic; black heavy metal concert t-shirts, tight faded jeans, denim jackets, chain wallets, and long feathered hair on both men and women. RIVERSIDE F****N' A! *

* A few years ago, when I was driving around Buffalo, I passed underneath a railroad viaduct in Riverside. Spraypainted on the viaduct was "SLAYER RULES".

Dan, you need to take a trip down to the old "yinzer" neighborhoods in and around Pittsburgh. Buffalo isn't the only place where "the mullet lives".

You all want "stuck in 80's"? I got "stuck in 80's" for you:

I have been to five Bon Jovi concerts in my lifetime, and two of those I went to BY MYSELF!

I didn't get old enough to go to concerts until the 90's, but when I did, I saw most of my 80's favorites, such as:

Ted Nugent (twice)
Poison (twice)
AC/DC
Did I mention Bon Jovi?

80's toys kicked too. Transformers, G.I. Joe, and the orginal Star Wars action figures! Yay!

Hey guys, did any of you ever hit someone that called your action figures "dolls"?

I remember the Pontiac Fiero as being the "car of the 80s"

I had tight biker shorts, a spike haircut w/ lines in my sides (no sideburns), fake Oakley "blades", Ocean Pacific T-shirts-- I was the coolest 10 year old around in the mid and late 80s. :-$

Def Leppard is a pure 80s band.

And what about the Delorean? Gull wings, stainless steel exterior - is this a planner's car or what?

performing with the Amboy Dukes with their classic "Journey to the Center of the Mind."

No photoshop, just the first photo I came across when I googled 'Delorean.' Too much a coincidence to pass up.

Back around 80 - 83 I recall video arcades as being a lifestyle. They're still around today but there's an entirely different significance and feel to them. Hmmm ...maybe this is one of those 'ghosts from the past thing'. If I could walk into 'Video Empire' today with people I knew back then and play Galaga, Defender, Battle Zone, Star Castle, and Donkey Kong the experience would probably be hollow at best.
