Having only been here a short while I can't say much, but who though it was a good idea to put the sixth largest metro in the us in the middle of the desert. There seems to be no natural reason for its existence. What forces led to its creation and booning development. (Fording the Salt River doesn't count--never was all that big) I'm genuinely puzzled. No port, not on a rr mainline... Why is it so big?

Climate is one reason. The other is the damning of te Colorodo River. I can'r guess at anything else.

I've always wondered. I personally hate the heat more than I do cold weather (so why am I living on then edge of the Sacramento Valley?) and Phoenix just seems so relentlessly hot.

My image of Phoenix is of everything I dislike in modern American urbanism, so I have no desire to visit. :)
