On the rise: monitoring employees’ Web habits

By Preeti Vasishtha
GCN Staff

Many agencies know what their workers are doing and where they are going on the Internet.

More than 200 federal, state and local agencies use software that monitors how employees use the Internet at work.

Some critics have raised concerns that using such software can threaten employees’ privacy rights and lead to discriminatory practices by management.

But federal managers defend the use of the applications.

What about in your office? Are you the only one with the tech savy to implement this kind of system? Is someone likely to be looking over your shoulder? Are there more concerns about whether you're at the driving range when you should be doing field work?

I have the ability to give and to take away. I hold the passwords to the firewall and the network. Do not upset the great and powerful El Guapo or he shall ban your favorite web sites and play havoc with your print jobs! Buhahahahaha!

The City has an IT department with more people than many small towns. I sure hope they're too busy to notice me...

I don't care if they know what I am doing because I am sure it is better than half of what the people in my office here are looking at.

I'm sure we have some sort of monitoring program, but our MIS people are way too overloaded with work to monkey with it. Anyway, this is a MIS department that can be bribed with easter candy to install games on a secretary's computer. hee.

I'm sure we're being watched, especially after an employee was arrested at work for having kiddie porn on his computer a few years ago. Anyways, I work well over 50 hours most weeks, so my Cyburbia time is break time and lunch hour. We are allowed to use the net for personal use as long as it is not 'inappropriate'. So far the only documented case of 'inappropriate' was the porn guy.

They're watching me? Damn! I knew it! Time to put on the tin foil suit and buy a copy of "Catcher in the Rye." Is that a microchip in my neck?

One of the scariest movies ever and it was done by Disney.
