Journeymouse's quip about singing "Father Christmas" got to thinking about what everyones favorite Christmas tunes might be. I know how much this group loves talking about music. Maybe this will help put us in the spirit. Feel free to include any songs you would be prefectly happy never to hear again. (Elmo & Patsy anyone?)

(Hopefully this thread will be EG/Tipper approved) ;)

That and Christmas in Hollis -- Run DMC are my faves.

I love Aretha Franklin's Joy to the World. I can do without I Want A Hippopotamus for Christmas and the one sung by John Lennon and recently by Carly Simon.

My all time favorite X-mas tune is Run Dmc - Christmas In Hollis. It is always the first X-mas tune I play when I get in the holiday spirit.

Some other greats:

The Pogues - Fairytale Of New York
The Ramones - Merry Christmas (I Don’t Wanna Fight)
Johnny Mathis - Sleigh Ride
Beach Boys - Little Saint Nick
The Roches - Deck The Halls (A female "barbershop quartet" from the late 70s-early 80s...you wont hear a better version!)
The Kinks - Father Christmas
Anything off the Phil Spector "A Christmas Gift For You" cd
Neil Diamond - Jingle Bell Rock

This year I got the Mr. Hankey's Christmas Classics (south park) and it is tasteless and excellent at the same time.

I'm still fond of Bob & Doug McKenzie's 12 Days of Christmas...

McKenzies' 12 Days of Christmas - I think it ranks up there with Stairway to Heaven.

My picks

For as long as I can remeber my favorite Christmas song was "Christmas Wrapping" by The Waitresses
I think this year it maybe have finally been replaced by No Doubts' cover of the Vandal's "Oi To The World". I think I've listened to that song over a dozen times in the past week alone.
For best album I still have to say Harry Connick Jr's "When My Heart Finds Christmas"
For best Counrty Chrismas Song I'd say Garth Brook's "The Gift"
Another new favorite (although it's not really too Christmas-y) is Moxy Fruvous' Hugh on the Luge

As for songs that make stick sharp objects in my ears, it's a toss up between the afore mentioned "Gramma Got Run Over..." and "The Twelve Pains of Christmas"

NHPlanner that was great!!

Another good one is Pansy Division's (an all-gay punk band from CA) "Homo Christmas"

Me too!

I also like the following ska/reggae Christmas tunes:

Sound the Trumpet by Bob Marley, backed up by the Skatellites.
Christmas Time Is Here by the Heptones
A reggae version of the "the little drummer boy" by Michigan and Smiley.

Oh yeah... and I heard a reggae version of the Dreydle song once.. that was pretty good.

And my all time Christmas sticky song is Feliz Navidad... that thing can get stuck in my head for two weeks or more around Christmas.

A couple of years ago Natalie Merchant's "Children Go Where I Send Thee" was getting a lot of play here. I liked it enough to buy the CD and still listen to it. I also love the Barra McNeils (Nova Scotian celtic group) doing Oh holy night.

This is the 'Father Christmas' I was singing:
Father Christmas...Father Christmas
He's the meanest man in the whole wide world
in the whole wide world you can feel it.

He's a miser! He's a skinflint !
He's stingy louse with his stocking out
for your Christmas gift and he'll steal it.

It's a shame, he's a villian
What a game, for a villian to play
on Christmas Day!

Father Christmas...Father Christmas
who'll be just as mean as he's ever been
and I'm here to say we should all send Father Christmas
on his merry Christmas way!!

Father Christmas...Father Christmas
he's the rottenest man in the universe
there's no one worse you can tell it

He's a rascal ! He's a bandit !
he's a crafty one, keep it all undone
he'll go in your house and sell it !

It's a crime, it's a scandal
what a game for a vandal to play
on Christmas Day!

If you distrust, Father Christmas
it's well to know, that his heart's of stone
cause I'm here to say, we should all send Father Christmas

Father Christmas...Father Christmas…..Father Christmas...Father Christmas

ON HIS MERRY CHRISTMAS WAY!!!!
Anyway I like the stop the cavalry song...

"Snoopy's Christmas" by the Royal Guardsmen. I got the 45 in fifth grade and I still have it. Now I have the CD and my son and I play it every year before Christmas while I get nostalgic.
